Jonathan Edwards was an early "evangelist"
in that he was born in 1703. He moved to Northampton, Massachusetts in 1727 and
was well known there until he moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts in 1751. On
February 16, 1758 he was inaugurated as the third president of Princeton
University (then named New Jersey College). On March 22, 1758 he died
from complications stemming from a smallpox inoculation he had received a week
earlier.
His most well known sermon is titled "Sinners
in the Hands of an Angry God". I have found his works to be difficult to
read only because of the deep theological nature of his writing.
